MLK Celebration

City of Tacoma

“The function of education is to teach one to think intensively and to think critically. Intelligence plus character - that is the goal of education.”
Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

Dr. Dexter Gordon to Receive 30th Annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Community Service Award

The 2018 Martin Luther King, Jr. Community Service Award recipient is Dr. Dexter Gordon, director of the Race & Pedagogy Institute at the University of Puget Sound. Dr. Gordon is a published author, professor and community advocate for social change. He demonstrates exemplary leadership that embodies the values of equity and inclusion and, for many years, has promoted and advocated for a campus environment and city that embraces racial and cultural differences.

“The committee is thrilled to present the service award to Dr. Dexter Gordon,” said Events and Recognition Committee Chair Erin Lee. “A former student of his said that taking his class was a life-changing experience. That testimonial and all of the other community comments about Dr. Gordon convinced us he truly embodies this year’s theme, ‘Be the Change.’”

This lifetime service award is presented each year at the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Birthday Celebration. It recognizes and encourages excellence in community service activities carried out by an individual, organization or group whose efforts reflect the essence of Dr. King’s teachings.

Keynote Speaker Announced

The featured keynote speaker will be Nate Bowling, 2014 recipient of the Milken Family Foundation's National Educator Award, the 2016 Washington State Teacher of the Year, and currently teaches advanced placement courses at Lincoln High School in Tacoma.

2018 Community Service Award Nominations Now Closed

The Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Community Service Award nomination period is now closed. Please consider nominating someone for the 2018 City of Destiny Awards. Applications due January 26, 2018.

MLK Day of Service

Group Planting

Make MLK Day a day on, instead of a day off, by volunteering with the Green Tukwila Partnership! Take advantage of this day of service by giving back to the community and the environment. We will be spending the morning working along the Duwamish River shoreline to plant native trees and shrubs and to remove invasive weeds in hopes of restoring this critical habitat. All are welcome to come, no experience necessary, so invite your friends, family, and coworkers to give back!

We’ll have a great view of an osprey nest and some occasional otter and bunny sightings while we work next to the river. What greater way to celebrate Martin Luther King Jr. than by getting your hands dirty, convening with nature and doing something great for your community and the environment.

Broadway Center presents

L.A. Theatreworks’
The Mountaintop

Saturday, January 13, 2018 at 7:30 p.m.
Pantages Theater
Tickets: $19, $40, $55, $69
The play will star film, television, and stage actors Karen Malina White and Gilbert Glenn Brown. Shirley Jo Finney will direct.

On April 4th, 1968, Martin Luther King Jr. was assassinated outside of his room at the Lorraine Motel in Memphis. What happened inside room 306 on the evening of April 3rd is the stirring subject of The Mountaintop.

Winner of the prestigious Olivier Award for Best New Play, The Mountaintop is rife with humor and political jabs, while giving us a glimpse at the human side of Martin Luther King Jr. Hours after his famed final speech, punctuated by the immortal line, “I’ve been to the mountaintop,” the celebrated Reverend reveals his hopes, regrets, and fears, creating a masterful bridge between mortality and immortality. In 2018, America and the world marks the 50th anniversary of the death of Martin Luther King Jr., yet, struggles to resolve racial tension remain a challenge for communities everywhere.

The Mountaintop contains some mature language.

Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service

MLK Day 2015 Food volunteers

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. once said,

“Life’s most urgent question is: what are you doing for others?”

Each year, the University of Washington–in partnership with United Way of King County–hosts the Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service, an event that engages nearly three thousand volunteers in day-long service projects throughout King County. These projects provide vital people-power to organizations that support our county’s most vulnerable populations.

Celebrate the legacy of Dr. King by taking advantage of the national holiday to serve!

This event is part of the United We Serve initiative, which calls for Americans from all walks of life to work together to provide solutions to our nations most pressing problems.

How can I participate as a volunteer?

Registration for service projects is now open!

There are two ways to volunteer during MLK Day service. You can sign up through the United Way of King County website to be a project leader (then recruit your team!) OR you can sign up as an individual for a public project.

As a project leader you are responsible for choosing a project for your team and claiming all the volunteer slots, recruiting volunteers, and acting as the liaison between the nonprofit partner and volunteer group. Ready to be a project leader? Click here for detailed instructions.

Here’s how to register as a group:

  • Pick a project from the list below, click “View Details,” and then click “respond as a group.” Note that you may volunteer alongside other groups.
    • The Carlson Center may be able to help your small (15 people or less!) UW affiliated group connect with a project located near the University District. If you’re interested in exploring this option, please contact us at engage@uw.edu.
    • If you would like a private project just for your team, please email volunteers@uwkc.org to ensure there are no other groups registered for the project you’re interested in.
  • Create a volunteer profile if you don’t have one, or log in if you do.
  • Enter your group name and click submit.
  • Click “add member” to register yourself and claim the amount of spots you need.

If you are registering as an individual not associated to a group please also make sure you connect with the nonprofit host so you confirm logistics.

How can my organization host volunteers?

Your organization can be part of this event by listing your MLK Day volunteer projects with United Way! Project registration for 2018 is officially closed. . .but if you’re interested in listing a last minute volunteer opportunity, please contact the team at volunteers@uwkc.org for help listing your opportunity!

A few things you should know about the MLK Day of Service through United Way of King County:

  • Projects typically take place on the Monday MLK Day Holiday and last 3-6 hours.
    • Projects over the weekend prior to MLK day are also welcome!
    • Projects should start no earlier than 9:00 a.m.
  • Projects must take place in King County.
  • To submit a project, you must be a registered 501(c)3 nonprofit, school, park or community group.
  • Project hosts (that’s you!) must be able to provide all necessary supplies for the project.
  • Indoor and family-friendly projects are strongly encouraged (though all projects are welcome).
  • Projects that include an element of social justice or address racial disparities (for example: projects supporting under served populations or sharing information on your target populations with volunteers and/or ending your project with a reflection) are also encouraged.
  • United Way will be working hard to promote this event, but cannot guarantee that all projects will be selected by a volunteer group. For each project you submit, United Way of King County will then work to engage community resources to fulfill your service opportunity. You will be notified when volunteers join your project.

The deadline to submit projects is usually the 2nd week of November. Late addition projects are accepted, but have a lower chance of being filled by a volunteer group. Contact us at volunteers@uwkc.org with questions about posting projects!
